Abstract

Background: Carotid stenosis is one  of  the main reasons for  stroke.  Our  objective was to assess the risks and benefits of carotid endarterectomy, primarily in terms of stroke prevention, in patients with symptomatic and nonsymptomatic carotid stenosis. This study reports the surgical results of those patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy in Da Nang Hospital. Methods: This observation enrolled 215 patients with severe carotid stenosis, who underwent carotic endartectomy. The rates of perioperative complication, stroke, and  death at 30 days and the final assessment of stroke severity at 6 months and 1 year were calculated. Findings: The background  specification  with a gender ratio of 75.8% male, the average age is 65.29, 80% of patients who has symptoms, and 25 patients underwent bilateral carotid endarterectomy. In 215 patients, there were 13 outcome events. At 30 days the  results  were as follows: death, 0%; disabling stroke, 2.3%; mild nerve injury, 1.8%; wound hematoma, 1.8%. At 6 months and 1 year, no stroke was recorded. Interpretation: The overall rate of perioperative stroke and death was 2.3. Other surgical complications were at a low rate. Carotid endarterectomy is a safe and feasible procedure.
