Abstract

Background: Diabetes is one of the common non-communicable diseases and causes many complications. Diabetic autonomic neuropathy is an underdiagnosed condition. Orthostatic hypotension is one of the main manifestations of autonomic neuropathy, associated with cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure and myocardial infarction. The study was conducted to evaluate the status of orthostatic hypotension and its relationship with cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes patients. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study in 104 type 2 diabetic patients, collected with upine and standing blood pressure, autonomic neuropathy symptoms, cardiovascular risk factors, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c.Results: The prevalence of type 2 diabetic patiens who has orthostatic hypotension was 33.65%. Orthostatic hypotension was related with hypertension and the time to detect diabetes ≥10 years (p<0.05). Orthostatic hypotension was not related with age, gender, overweight, obesity, increased waist circumference, smoking, physical inactivity (p>0.05). Conclusion: There are 33.65% of type 2 diabetic patients that has orthostatic hypotension. There is a relationship between orthostatic hypotension with hypertension and diabetes detection time ≥ 10 years.
