Abstract

Background: Obesity is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by an increased total body fat mass of sufficient magnitude to produce adverse health consequences, and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Low vitamin D status and obesity have concomitantly reached epidemic levels worldwide. However, the nature of the association between low vitamin D status and obesity remains unclear. In the world, a lot of research has investigated the relationships between Low vitamin D status and obesity. However, the results of other studies are conflicting and controversial. Therefore, we conducted a study: “The relationships between vitamin D status and overweight–obesity”. Objective: (1). Determine the prevalence of  vitamin D insufficiency,   and overweight–obesity in the subjects for general health examinations at the International Medical Center - Hue Central Hospital. (2). Investigate the relationships between vitamin D status and overweight–obesity in the study subjects. Material and method: A cross- sectional study on 320 adult subjects for health examinations at International Medical Center at Hue Central Hospital. Plasma hydroxyvitamin D concentration was measured using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Results: In the study subjects, the prevalence  of vitamin D insufficiency, and overweight– obesity were 55,2% and 56,4%. Vitamin D insufficiency prevalence in subjects with overweight–obesity was 60,8% higher than subjects with normal BMI was 47,9% (p < 0,001). There was an inverse relationship between the plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration and BMI (r = -0,122, p < 0,05). Conclusion: It is necessary to perform a 25(OH)D test in people with overweight– obesity. We propose the prospective and intervention studies of vitamin D in subjects with with overweight–obesity status.
