Abstract

Background: Frailty syndrome is a common geriatric syndrome that predicts mortality and disability in the older adults. This syndrome is associated with diabetes, posing a major challenge to the health care system. Objectives: to determine the prevalence of frailty syndrome and its associated factors in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes at the National Geriatric Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. Subjects and methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 238 diabetic patients who was examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital from 03/2023 to 06/2023. Study subjects were interviewed according to a uniform medical record form. Results: The average age in the study was 74.8 ± 6.6 years old, female was accounted for 67.25%. Research results showed that 24% of people with diabetes have a frailty syndrome, of which the very frail group accounted for 6%. There was a relationship between the prevalence of the frailty syndrome and the age group, as the result showed that 90% of patients > 85 years old had this syndrome. The prevalence of frailty syndrome was higher in the group with low BMI, long duration of diabetes, hypoglycemia and dependence in activities of daily living. However, there was no difference in gender, education level, marital status, area of residence and HbA1c with IBD. Conclusion: A high prevalence of older diabetic patients have frailty syndrome. Screening for early detection of frailty syndrome is needed to provide appropriate healthcare plans for this group of patients.
