Abstract
Objective: Determine the rate of knee osteoarthritis and study some related factors in older patients with diabetes in National Geriatric Hospital. Subjects and methods: a cross- sectional descriptive stuty on patients ≥ 65 years old with diatetes mellitus (DM) examined and treated at the National Geriatric Hospital. Study subjects were diagnosed with diabetes according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association- ADA 20221. Diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis (OA) according to the criteria of ACR 19912. Results: the study was conducted on 256 older patients, the mean age was 75.2 ± 6.8 years old, female accounted for 63.7%. The rate of knee OA was 46.1% (118 patients), of which 86 female patients accounted for 72.9%, male 32 patients accounted for 27.1%. The rate of knee pain in the group that did not control HbA1C (51.6%) was higher than that in the control group that achieved the goal of HbA1C (38.9%). The prevalence of knee OA is associated with female sex, decreased non – instrumental daily functioning (ADL), and a history of falls. Conclusion: the rate of knee osteoarthritis in older diabetic patiens is 46.1%, knee osteoarthritis is related to female sex, HbA1C uncontrollable, impaired daily functioning (ADL) and history of falls.
