Abstract

Background: Adherence to treatment (diet, lifestyle and medication) is one of the key factors in achieving diabetes treatment effectiveness. Objectives: To describe the status of treatment adherence of diabetic outpatient at Thieu Hoa General Hospital and identify some reasons for limiting treatment compliance of the above subjects. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in 200 diabetic patients, who was examined and treated at outpatient department, Thieu Hoa General Hospital. The subjects were interviewed using a unified medical record: assessing compliance with diet, physical activity, medication and regular checkups. Results: Of the 200 diabetic patients, the proportion of patients aged ≥ 60 years accounted for 52.5%; the percentage of female accounted for 55.5%. The proportion of patients who regularly followed diet, exercises and regular examinations were 31.5%; 46.0% and 94.0%, respectively. The percentage of patients who did not follow the diet, exercises and regular examinations were 25%, 25% and 6%, respectively. The proportion of patients who forgot to take medicine was 27.7%. The percentage of patients who have not been advised on diet and exercise were 34% and 40.7% respectively. Conclusion: The rate of adherence to diet, physical activity and medication of diabetic patients in outpatient department at Thieu Hoa General Hospital were low. Therefore, it is necessary to have direct counseling measures, health education for diabetic patients.
