Abstract

According to the International Diabetes Federation IDF 2019, by 2045 there will be 700 million people with diabetes worldwide (51% up). The primary goal of diabetes treatment is to achieve and maintain control of blood glucose and reduce the risk of complications associated with long-term diabetes. Studies have shown that tight blood glucose control can reduce, slow down, or even prevent complications. However, aggressive treatment with hypoglycemic drug therapies is a risk factor for hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is one of the most severe treatment-related complications, (especially the SU and insulin groups). It can cause disability and even life-threatening in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Hypoglycemia is also one of the biggest barriers to optimal level of blood glucose control in diabetic patients.
